“I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more”
-Proclaimers, I Would Walk 500 Miles
In 2014, it is my goal to walk 1,000 miles*.
To raise awareness about abuse and violence, and to raise funds for Teller Safe Harbor (to have our own safe house sooner rather than later), and to walk in honor of those who have been silenced…without a voice of their own – and sometimes who have been silenced forever.
Here’s how it works —
I will walk in some capacity every single day** of 2014. I will walk in honor of a victim, past or present. I will carry their name with me, photograph their name, and share the photo and distance*** that day on the site under the 1,000 Miles category.
How will I know who to walk for?
That’s where you come in. Please share with me the name of someone for whom you’d like me to walk. A friend? A sister? A mother? Maybe this person is deep in the trenches of a terrible place. Or maybe they have moved into a beautiful time of life. Or maybe they aren’t here anymore. It doesn’t matter, I’ll walk in their honor. You can send their first name only, or initials, or even “Anonymous, submitted by J.P.” You’ll know who it is. I don’t need to know that which is private, if you don’t wish to share. But if there is something you’d like to share, by all means, please do so. And I can walk for YOU, too.
If I don’t have a name, I’ll find one online. Unfortunately, the news is full of victims.
For the first day, I will kick off this challenge, this event of the heart, with my own name. Because ultimately, the healing began here before it could spread outward.
(Subject: Please walk for __________ Please include something important, like “Survivor” or “RIP.” Also, I would love to be able to send you a thank you, so your contact information would be helpful — but it is NOT required.)
It is my hope that I can help raise funds for my community’s efforts to have its own safe house. If you are so inclined, please make a donation, no matter the size, to Teller Safe Harbor HERE. (Please do not ever send money to me.)
If supporting your own community organizations is more up your alley, please find out who helps victims of abuse and violence in your community, and then donate to them (or volunteer!). And send me their name to add to this page.
We’re all in this together, so let’s work together. YOU CAN JOIN ME, TOO!
*For practical reasons, I am not walking 1,000 miles away from home. Each day, I’ll be starting from my own front door, walking whatever distance I am able to go that day, doing whatever I can, because helping others – doing something – begins at home, with whatever you have.
**Emergencies arise. If health is an issue, I will give myself grace and make up the mileage on another day.
***Distance will be tracked by the Runtastic phone app.
