Question: What is this about?
Answer: I wish to raise awareness about abuse and violence in all its many ugly forms through words, pictures, statistics, organizations, etc.
Question: What does a tiara have to do with it?
Answer: I personally like tiaras and I feel very pretty when I wear them. However, a tiara simply isn’t an everyday normal accessory, so it is almost an act of courage to go out in public wearing one. People stare, shake their heads, make assumptions. That’s what happens to victims of abuse: people stare, shake their heads, and make assumptions. Why does she stay? What an idiot! She should know better. Why did she go back to him? To me, the tiara represents a more beautiful side of things, and the ultimate goal is to find and reclaim my beautiful self after so many years of feeling ugly and discarded, abused and used and assumed I’m worthless.
Question: What can I do?
Answer: You can read this site, educate yourself, give donations to organizations that try to help victims (shelters, safe houses, etc.), open your mind to what a victim actually goes through, share with others, and wear a tiara, of course!
Question: What will happen through this project?
Answer: Only time will tell, but it is my hope to reach at least one. One woman who needs to know she will be okay. One teenage girl who sees she doesn’t have to stay with the abusive boyfriend. One beautiful soul who is mired in the muck of her past, not realizing it’s time to climb out and reclaim herself NOW.
Question: Why is this site only geared toward women?
Answer: I know boys and men are often victims of abuse, and that truly breaks my heart. But I am a woman and I don’t know what it’s like to be male, to experience that pain. I can only speak to the pain and healing I’ve experienced as a woman. And I believe boys and men likely need to hear from other boys and men who can empathize with their pain. I am not opposed to speaking out and walking for male victims, however, and will do so when asked or the opportunity arises.
Question: Where is Scars and Tiaras based?
Answer: This site is my personal project, and I as the writer and photographer am based in the Colorado Springs, Colorado area.
